The topic of school uniform has been highly debated for many years. Wearing school uniform has both its advantages and disadvantages. For me, I think that school uniform policy should not be compulsory in schools. A school uniform policy hinders on individual self-expression, creativity and personality. I agree with this statement because I think students will feel have more freedom of being themselves if they are not wearing school uniform. There are some reasons why I agree on this statement.
Firstly, if students are allowed to wear their casual clothes to school and not school uniforms, they will be able to show their individual self-expression and express their creativity through their clothing. Everyone has its own preference when it comes to what they wear and how they dress themselves. With no specific clothes to wear, they can be creative and wear varieties of style that suits themselves. It makes them more confident on how they look in school and this improve their self-esteem. For example, students may wear the clothes they like to wear, like shirt and trousers, and also hoodies. Therefore, wearing the same uniform throughout their school years hinders them from being creative and unique.
Besides that, a school uniform policy hinders on student’s personality. Every student must have their own personality and identity. Through what they wear to school and their sense of style, it can show their individual’s personality, whether it is casual, classic, chic or trendy. Fashion gives an idea of who they are, what the person is all about and their likes and dislikes. It is also a part of their appearance, ethics, traditions, culture, moral values and the characteristics by which they identify themselves. By being able to show their personality, it can elevate their feelings when they go to school.
In addition, students should not wear school uniforms because they are often very expensive. People who come from less fortunate family will feel the burden of having to use a lot of money to comply to the school’s rules. School uniforms usually of shirt, trousers or skirts, with accessories like ties and also blazer. These clothes are usually high in price especially if there is a specific dress code that needs to be followed by the students. For example, some schools require students to wear trousers or skirts that have specific colour of the school, and this require them to tailor-made their uniforms. This increases the cost of schooling and some people might not be able to join school because of this.
Lastly, school uniforms are uncomfortable. Students need to wear the school uniform form at least 7 hours a day and this can make them feel uncomfortable. School uniforms are usually tight and the material of the clothes can make the students feel very hot wearing them. To be able to study and focus well in class, students should wear clothes that makes them feel comfortable. For instance, students should be allowed to wear clothes that makes them feel comfy and at ease. Making students wear the same clothes all year long can bring discomfort to students and this can also affect their learning.
As a conclusion, I think school uniforms should not be compulsory in school because it hinders the students from expressing their selves and personality, being creative, and the school uniform is expensive and uncomfortable. Schools should not be too strict in setting rules regarding clothes of the students. Wearing their own preferred clothes to school will bring a lot of benefits for the students and the school.
