Hello everyone! I hope you are happy and healthy. Today, I would like to talk about the topic “Depression: More Than Just Feeling Blue”.

“What people never understand is that depression isn’t about the outside, it’s about the inside.” This quote, proclaimed by the famous author Jasmine Warga, describes how depression actually feels. Most people think being depressed is equal to being sad, when actually depression is more than just feeling blue. Depression is defined as a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. There are several reasons that can lead to depression. We must be aware of its symptoms and how to treat this disorder to ensure our own safety and others.
Depression is a complex disease. Main factors of depression include having serious illness, alcohol or drug use, family and academic problems, and bullying. When someone faces challenges in their life, they are prone to feeling sad and stressed over their problems. Their minds are filled with thoughts on how to solve the problems. Being overwhelmed with these thoughts will finally make them have depression. This feeling can be worse when they are left alone without having any company to share their problems with.
Symptoms of depression can vary from sadness to fatigue. Not all people experience the symptoms in the same way, therefore it is difficult to pinpoint what are the signs of depression. However, there are still common symptoms that people may experience. For instance, people who are depressed often lose interest in the activities they used to love. They also isolate themselves from their family and friends because they feel comfortable being alone. The most dangerous sign is they always think about death and suicide. If this happens, it is important to get help as quickly as they can.
Overcoming depression is not an easy feat, it takes a lot of steps in order to get over feeling depressed. The first and principal step is to ask for help from other people. It may seem difficult to open up about your feelings, but keeping everything to yourself will only cause you more harm. Next, try to socialise with your family and peers. As you get outside and connect with others, you will likely feel happier. Lastly, adopting healthy habits in your daily life will be beneficial towards your health. This includes getting sufficient hours of sleep and eating a balanced diet.
In conclusion, depression can have detrimental effects on someone’s life if it's not being treated. As a responsible member of the community, being educated on this mental illness will help people who have depression to deal with this problem. We should put an end to common negative stigmas regarding depression and be an open-minded person. Depression is not a joke.
That is all from me today. I welcome your opinions on this topic if you have anything to share. Thank you for reading.
